Hellboy: The Crooked Man: Everything We Know So Far About The Comic Book Movie Reboot

A new “Hellboy” reboot is coming! Created by artist and writer Mike Mignola in 1993 for Dark Horse Comics, Hellboy is a larger-than-life half-human, a half-demon superhero. Through the decades, Hellboy has found steady success in printed publications and continued to appear on the page even 30 years after his origin. In a comics landscape that is consistently changing, Hellboy has managed to stay endlessly relevant.

While the monster hunter has been successful in the arena of comic books, his arrival on the silver screen is mired with uncertainty. The character has been previously brought to life in Guillermo del Toro’s two-part film franchise starring actor Ron Perlman as the harbinger of the apocalypse. While the first two films made a “little bit of profit,” a third never materialized as studios saw it as a “dangerous” project, del Toro once revealed.

A 2019 reboot of the film starring actor David Harbour was a commercial and critical failure. A second reboot is now being developed in the form of “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” which will present a new, unseen iteration of the character.

Here’s everything we know about “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” including its story, cast members, and tentative release date.

Everything We Know About The Story Of Hellboy: The Crooked Man

The new film marks the first time in the “Hellboy” franchise that Mike Mignola, who created the character, will write the script alongside his comics collaborator Chris Golden. The project promises to stay true to Hellboy’s origin and his comic book mythology, and with Mignola at the helm, we can expect a cinematic, horror rendition of the beloved character. The new reboot is being described as “a departure from all previous Hellboy films where Mignola, the creator of the comics, will finally shepherd an authentic version of his stories and characters in film form.”

An official synopsis for “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” notes that the reboot will follow “Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they soon discover a community haunted by witches, which is being led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.”

The film is inspired by one of the fan-favorite comic issues, where the Crooked Man was detailed to be an “eighteenth-century miser and war profiteer named Jeremiah Witkins who was hanged for his crimes yet returned from Hell as the region’s resident Devil.” The villain has a connection to Hellboy’s past, which the film is set to unravel.

Who’s In The Cast And Crew Of Hellboy: The Crooked Man?

“Hellboy: The Crooked Man” has found its Hellboy. Jack Kesy, who played Black Tom Cassidy in “Deadpool 2,” is set to play the titular superhero, Giant Freakin Robot revealed in March 2023. Other cast members include “Yellowstone” star Jefferson White as Tom Ferrell and Adeline Rudolph from “Resident Evil” as Bobbie Jo Song. Brian Taylor, who co-directed “Crank,” is set to direct the film.

Millenium Media will partner with Telepool to co-produce the film. The project has enlisted Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson, and Millennium Media’s Jeffrey Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, Les Weldon, Rob Van Norden, and Yariv Lerner to produce the movie. Creator Mike Mignola, Millennium Media’s Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, and Tanner Mobley, and Campbell Grobman Films’ Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell are among the executive producers. Sam Schulte will co-produce “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” on behalf of Millennium Media.
